Sioux Falls' Sioux Empire Plaza

The second major shopping complex in the Queen City of the West debuted in September 1975. The complex was originally promoted as SIOUX EMPIRE PLAZA (as seen in the top logo). By 1978, the logo -and mall name- had changed. The center would be known, henceforth, as THE EMPIRE.

In its original state, SIOUX EMPIRE PLAZA encompassed approximately 516,000 leasable square feet and contained thirty-four stores under its roof. The 10 million dollar complex was anchored by Younkers and a boutique-type Herberger's.
