As FOUR SEASONS MALL was being dedicated, a commercial counterpart was being built on the northeast side of the city. CAROLINA CIRCLE MALL opened for business in February 1976. It would be shuttered in 2002.

Washington, DC psychic Jeane Dixon reputedly foretold the collapse of several mid-century malls. In the 1970s, an urban legend circulated saying that Mrs. Dixon had predicted that FOUR SEASONS MALL would fall. This was not a local phenomenon. I remember hearing such a "prediction" for Ohio's DAYTON MALL. I have also read that the same dire forecast was made for Georgia's CUMBERLAND MALL, as well as Tennessee's 100 OAKS MALL.
