A 10-year-long "only mall in town" stretch was enjoyed by THE CITADEL. This idyll  came to an end in 1982, with the completion of CHAPEL HILLS MALL.

A keeping-up-type renovation of THE CITADEL was completed in 1984. The original T-shaped shopping center was enlarged with an extended West Wing and May D & F department store. Colorado Springs' original shopping mall now spanned approximately 910,700 leasable square feet.
