The renowned HOK (Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum) firm designed HULEN MALL. A few of their contemporary projects would have been Houston's GALLERIA POST OAK (1970), the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) Airport Terminal (1973) and Washington, DC's National Air & Space Museum (1976).

A site plan from late 1977 depicts the double-decked, 580,000 square foot shopping center. In its original incarnation, it was anchored by Sanger-Harris and Montgomery Ward. Like previously-developed Rouse properties, such as MALL IN COLUMBIA {Maryland} and PARAMUS PARK {New Jersey}, HULEN featured a bright and airy, tree-lined shopping concourse.

A HULEN MALL logo montage is composed of trademarks of some of the eighty-seven charter stores that opened with the shopping complex in 1977.
By the late 1970s, Maryland's James Rouse Company had perfected the "food court" concept. At their HULEN property, the culinary complex was known as The Park. The 11-bay facility was located around two sides of the Lower Level Center Court.
