A Phase Two expansion (in gray) was officially dedicated in October 1979. The gross leasable area now measured approximately 1,148,400 square feet. The newly-enlarged parking area had space for 6,200 autos. For a short time, PLAZA CAMINO REAL would be promoted as the largest mall in the metropolitan area. However, it was trumped by expansions of the FASHION VALLEY and MISSION VALLEY malls in the early 1980s.
