Plans for a major mall renovation were on the drawing board for years. Projects were announced -and postponed- in 2009 and 2014. As part of the 2014 refurbishment, the roof of the complex was to be torn off and stores reoriented with an upscale "beach" motif.

Westfield repurposed a vacant Robinsons-May as a cinema, fitness facility and restaurant Streetscape. Instead of renovating the rest of the mall, they sold it, with Rouse Properties becoming the new owner. The Rouse portfolio was sold to Brookfield Property Partners. They amended the original remodeling plans. The roof would remain intact, with the complex being given a thorough indoor-outdoor makeover.

As part of its reinvention, the mall was renamed WESTFIELD CARLSBAD, and then, THE SHOPPES AT CARLSBAD. It emerged from a big time renovation in late 2018. Inline store space in the southeast wing was gutted and reconfigured as large Forever 21, Zara and H & M stores. A restaurant Streetscape, within the old Robinsons-May, was extended westward. The mall now encompasses approximately 1.1 million leasable square feet, with a tenant list of 100 stores and services.
