The first GATEWAY expansion was underway by late 1970. North and East Convenience Centers were completed between April and October 1971. A fully-enclosed concourse, or Gallery Mall, was added to the east side of the existing complex. Inline stores began opening in April 1972. When all construction dust settled, the mall proper spanned approximately 700,000 leasable square feet and had parking accommodations for 4,000 autos.

The Miller & Paine chain succumbed to that upper tier Arkansas-based retailer in August 1988. The Brandeis store next door had morphed into a Younkers in August 1987.
