By 2009, BROOKDALE was on life support. The Great Recession had contributed to the loss of two anchors. Steve & Barry's (in the old Penney's spot) shut down in late 2008, followed by Macy's (in the old Dayton's-Marshall Field's), which pulled out of the mall in 2009.

The moribund mall closed for good in April 2010. The bulk of the structure, save for Sears and the northwest store block, was demolished in June 2011. The complex was replaced by an open-air power plaza known as SHINGLE CREEK CROSSING. In this site plan, buildings left from the old BROOKDALE CENTER mall are surrounded in blue.

You Betcha! Above, we see a rendering of the shiny new WalMart that anchored SHINGLE CREEK CROSSING. The store opened its doors in September 2012.
