BROOKDALE was expanded in two stages. A first, completed in 1966, enlarged the existing Penney's into a full-line store and added a new East Mall and Dayton's. The second stage, dedicated in 1967, brought a Donaldson's and freestanding Red Owl supermarket. The complex now spanned approximately 857,000 leasable square feet and contained fifty-three stores under its roof.

The East Mall featured a 35-foot-high "Rain Fountain." Officially known as a Wonderfall, it consisted of a circle of nylon strings covered with descending drops of  glycerine. Such faux water features were almost a standard fixture of malls built between 1963 and 1970.

Zooming through the years, we come to a circa-2003 layout. This depicts BROOKDALE CENTER in its final glory days. 2003 would be the final year that all of its anchor spaces would be filled. Between 2001 and 2002, the northwest corner (in light gray) had been rebuilt. Unfortunately, this renovation could not stop a downward spiral that got underway with the closings of Mervyn's and J.C. Penney, in 2004.
