By the mid-'90s, the PLAZA was on life support. An "anchors away" scenario began with the shuttering of The Broadway, in August 1995. Its replacement, a Macy's Clearance Center, went dark in December 1997. Montgomery Ward was also shuttered at this time. The final operational anchor store, J.C. Penney, pulled its proverbial plug in June 1998.

The mall officially closed in February 1999. During its long state of slumber, the deserted shopping hub has become a favorite destination of urban explorers. It has also been used as a setting for several feature films, music videos and television programs.
