Los Angeles-based The Broadway anchored the center section of HAWTHORNE PLAZA. The store was the only 3-level tenant in the shopping venue. The Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney stores each had 2 floors.
Defining so-called '70s Brutalist architecture, the HAWTHORNE PLAZA J.C. Penney opened, along with the bulk of the mall, in February 1977.

In its original state, HAWTHORNE PLAZA spanned approximately 835,000 leasable square feet and contained 135 stores under its roof. There were three anchor department stores and free parking for 4,200 autos.
