The mid-1980s reinvention was unsuccessful. By the turn of the century, the mall had been in a downward spiral for several years. A wrecking ball renovation got underway in early 2003. The north-south and east-west mallways, and the old Jordan Marsh, were knocked down. The three remaining anchors were worked into an open-air power plaza of fifty-eight stores and services, which was completed in late 2006.
