A proposed redevelopment of WASHINGTON SQUARE would convert the mall into a predominantly open-air strip center. An original plan was to include a newly-built supermarket, but the Schnucks chain backed out of the deal in early 2015.

In a site plan of a reconfigured WASHINGTON SQUARE, the existing West Wing would have been the only part of the structure with an enclosed concourse. This Medical Mall would have accessed the existing St. Mary's Hospital offices and health care facilities. A new mall owner came on board in late 2016. They may carry out the mall renovation...sans the Schnucks store.
