A proposed redevelopment of WASHINGTON SQUARE would have converted the mall into a predominantly open-air strip center. The original plan was to include a newly-built supermarket, but the Schnucks chain backed out of the deal in early 2015.

In a tentative WASHINGTON SQUARE plan, the existing West Wing would have been the only part of the structure with an enclosed concourse. This Medical Mall would access the existing St. Mary's Hospital offices and health care facilities.
