Plans for a renovation had been on the drawing board for years. Projects were announced -and postponed- in 2009 and 2014. As part of the 2014 refurbishment, the roof of the complex was to be torn off and stores reoriented with an upscale "beach" motif.

Westfield sold "Carlsbad Mall" in November 2015, after repurposing a vacant Robinsons-May as a cinema, fitness center and restaurant Streetscape. In this circa-2017 plan, we see the new Dave & Buster's that has opened in the lower floor of the old anchor store structure.

The renovation proposed by Westfield was amended. Brookfield Property Partners, who now owned the facility, decided to maintain THE SHOPPES AT CARLSBAD as an enclosed mall, giving its interior and exterior a major makeover. This remodeling was complete by late 2018.
