Before there was a downtown shopping complex in Salem, there were three major department stores. Portland's Lipman, Wolfe & Company opened a Salem branch in October 1954. The store became renowned for its posh Cherry Room restaurant

In this snapshot, crowds await the grand opening of Meier & Frank, in October 1955. The store, with its Oregon Room restaurant, was the first branch in the Portland-based chain.

Salem's "New Generation" Penneys opened -as a freestanding store- in January 1965. It, and Meier & Frank, would go on to anchor the Cherry City's downtown mall.
