Baltimore's Glen Burnie Mall

The fifth in the succession of Greater Baltimore malls, the GLEN BURNIE complex was developed on a plot located 7 miles south of the center city. Signage for the original shopping hub was nearly identical to that for GREAT LAKES MALL, a northern Ohio development of the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation. In that case, the big letters read G L M.

Montgomery Ward's 161,000 square foot store was the first operational GBM tenant. The store opened for business in February 1963.

A mall soon followed. The original plan was for J.C. Penney to co-anchor the complex, with their store presiding over its north end. However, Penney's backed out of the plan. Construction proceeded, with the first inline stores at GLEN BURNIE MALL opening in late 1964.
