The shiny new TYSONS CORNER mall was anchored by two DC-based chains. A (165,000 square foot) Hecht's and (153,000 square foot) Woodward & Lothrop.

By 1969, a third anchor has been completed; DC-based Lansburgh's. The 1.2 million square foot mall, with free parking for 6,000 autos, is billed as one of America's largest. Other comparably-sized centers would have been New York City's ROOSEVELT FIELD MALL, Chicago's YORKTOWN CENTER, Washington State's SOUTHCENTER and San Francisco-Oakland's SUNVALLEY CENTER.

Lansburgh's opened in October 1969, but had an extremely brief tenure at the mall. By May 1973, it had been shuttered. City Stores, the parent company of Lansburgh's, decided to offer the building to E.J. Korvette, who operated a chain of discount stores. A lawsuit was filed against City Stores. They eventually abandoned the Korvettes plan and re-opened the store under their Lit Brothers division.
