With the two major Big Apple-based chains covered, we move on to other prominent "carriage trade" department stores of the Northeast. Perhaps a bit of clarification is necessary. The term "carriage trade" originated in the late 19th century. It was used in reference to upper-crust clientele who arrived at an establishment in their own private carriage (with members of the working class making the trip in a streetcar).
