The Richway chain of discount marts began with four Greater Atlanta stores, which were inaugurated in 1970. The "Everything Under The Sun" logo, seen above, was a homage to the slogan used for Richway television ads.

Original Richway stores featured red and green, wedge-shaped skylights with multicolored panes.
The man who started it all...Roses-wise. Paul Howard Rose hailed from Northampton County, North Carolina and rose (pardon the pun) to head the Southland's largest 5 & 10 chain.
Cincinnati's Federated Department Stores bought Atlanta's Rich's chain of upscale department stores in October 1976. The Richway discount division was included in the transaction. Federated eventually commissioned a new logo for its Richway stores.

Is it a 5 & 10 or a discount mart? After some thought, we have classed Roses as one of the latter. The company had humble beginnings -in Henderson, North Carolina- in mid-1915. Above, we see a full-page newspaper ad announcing the grand opening of a Roanoke Rapids unit. This dedication was held in November 1934.

A Roses logo montage features trademarks from (1) 1962, (2) 1985 and (3) 2021. The company gradually abandoned its 5 & 10-type stores, in order to concentrate on a discount department stores format. Roses achieved its 100th year in business in June 2015.

A typical contemporary Roses store, this 53,000 square foot unit is a tenant at Waynesboro, Virginia's WILLOW OAK PLAZA. After several years in business at this location, the WILLOW OAK Roses closed in 2001. It re-opened -in the same building- in 2009.
