Anchoring the east end of the complex was a 144,100 square foot J.C. Penney. At the time, it was the largest store in the shopping center.

The fifth anchor store at VANMALL was originally planned to be a Portland-based Lipmans. However, in August 1981, Mervyn's opened an 82,000 square foot store.  It was the chain's first Evergreen State location.
