The original APACHE MALL logo had been used to promote St. Anthony, Minnesota's APACHE PLAZA when that complex was dedicated, in October 1961. Like APACHE MALL, APACHE PLAZA was developed by the Apache Corporation, of Minneapolis.

APACHE MALL was officially dedicated in October 1969. At this time, the complex -Minnesota's largest shopping complex outside the Twin Cities- encompassed around 540,000 leasable square feet. J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward anchored the original mall. There were fifty-five charter stores and services, with free parking for over 4,000 autos.
A third anchor department store was added to APACHE MALL in the early '70s. Dayton's, based in Minneapolis, welcomed first shoppers in July 1972. One of the store's main features was its Bubbling Kettle restaurant.
