A circa-2019 plan shows modifications made since 2001. Marshall Field's succumbed to Macy's in 2006. Sears downsized its store in 2015, as the mall was being given an indoor-outdoor face lift. Lastly, a 12-bay Dining Pavilion opened -on the Upper Level- in mid-2018.

As the beleaguered Sears chain headed into the proverbial sunset, stores closed at an alarming pace. Just one Illinois unit remained. Observers wondered how long the lights in this flagship anchor would be staying on. They went dark in November 2021.
