The original SHARPSTOWN CENTER encompassed approximately 760,000 leasable square feet. It was promoted as a new concept in merchandising and had several state-of-the-art features. These included automatic climate-control and lighting and a mall-wide public address and hi-fidelity music system.

The first SHARPSTOWN motion picture venue, the freestanding Gaylynn Theatre, opened in May 1965. In June 1980, it would host the world premier of John Travolta's "Urban Cowboy."

The mall's first renovation was done between May 1975 and November 1976. During the refurbishment, Battelstein's was downsized into an expanded lower level. The store's upper floor became a prototype mall food court known as Good Time Charley's.
