In April 2018, plans were announced for an impending VALLEY RIVER CENTER renovation. A vacant Sports Authority building (on the mall's east side) would be replaced with an Outdoor Plaza. This public square would eventually be flanked by streetscape-type retail and restaurants, as shown in this rendering.

By 2020, the first stage of the Outdoor Plaza has been completed. It is just an open, grassed area. Stores will be added later. Three vacant anchor stores have also been retenanted, replaced or demolished. With these improvements, the gross leasable area of VALLEY RIVER CENTER has been adjusted down, to around 871,000 square feet.
