A map showing the locations of Greater Detroit's directionally-designated shopping malls. Three were originally planned. NORTHLAND {in Southfield} opened in March 1954. EASTLAND {in Harper Woods} was dedicated in August 1957. WESTLAND {in Westland} joined the fold in July 1965. A fourth mall -SOUTHLAND {in Taylor}- opened in July 1970.

The first of four SOUTHLAND plans depicts the mall of late 1970. At this time, the fully-enclosed complex was a single-level structure of sixty-five stores and around 535,500 leasable square feet. There was a sole anchor department store; Detroit's venerable J.L. Hudson.
