The first major shopping complex in northwestern Indiana's Calumet Region was located in the Woodmar district of Hammond. Construction started on WOODMAR CENTER in December 1953.

The concave-shaped shopping plaza was designed by Los Angeles' Victor Gruen Associates. It featured a pentagonal Carson Pirie Scot department store at its center point. A National Food supermarket extended from its south end.
