The MIDTOWN SQUARE Burlington Coat Factory pulled up stakes in 2001. In 2003, the final stores closed for good. Planning was soon underway for new open-air, mixed-use facilities. THE METROPOLITAN and MIDTOWN CROSSING developments would include retail, restaurant and residential components.

A vertically-stacked Home Depot Design Center and Target would anchor the original MIDTOWN CROSSING. These stores opened for business in October 2007. The Home Depot Design Center was short-lived. It closed in April 2009.
