Welcome to the largest mall and retail history site on the internet. The MALL HALL OF FAME is a vintage shopping mall scrapbook. Its focus is on shopping complexes built -in the USA- between 1946 and 1979. This site includes historical sections about regional department stores, discount stores, 5 & 10 stores and supermarkets. Don't forget to visit our four Shopping Mall Memory Lanes, which transport you through time to a mall in 1956, 1963, 1970 and 1977!

In an early 2000s aerial of CHAPEL SQUARE, a vacant lot once occupied by Malley's is seen in the upper right. Macy's, standing on the block between the former Malley's and mall, is in the center. From this vantage point, one can easily see the convoluted layout of the complex, with the mall proper on a first block and its anchor stores in peripheral positions on the second and third.

In 2004, the First Level of CHAPEL SQUARE was reconfigured with street level -outward-facing- retail stores. The Second Level was gutted and rebuilt as the Residence Court apartments. Units faced onto an inner courtyard, which had been the mall's shopping concourse.

The second and third CHAPEL SQUARE store blocks were cleared and redeveloped as the Gateway Community College campus depicted here. Built on the sites of the Malley Company and Macy's stores, it opened in the fall of 2012.
