WEST ACRES was hit with a double whammy in the late 2010s. Two of its anchor stores, Sears and Herberger's, were shuttered, creating around 287,000 square feet of vacant store space.

The vacant Sears was quickly repurposed. Best Buy moved from a freestanding location into a new store that was carved out of Sears' space. The remainder of the building was reconfigured as The District At West Acres, an exterior-entranced collection of trendy restaurants. The first of these opened for business in the spring of 2019.

The new Best Buy welcomed first shoppers in June 2018. The vacant Herberger's, on the west end of WEST ACRES CENTER, was retenanted by Iowa's Von Maur chain, who dedicated their store in 2025.
