Pogue's became the first operational NORTHGATE tenant in May 1972. This high-end '70s Brutalist-style store was the Cincinnati-based chain's third branch. Some of its features were The Ice Cream Balcony snack bar, which overlooked the mall's Center Court, and a glass-enclosed elevator that transported shoppers between three sales floors.

The McAlpin's chain built their eighth branch at NORTHGATE. The 191,000 square foot store, the largest in the mall, welcomed its first shoppers in June 1972.
