Work on EASTLAND commenced in 1955. The original plan was scrapped and an entirely new one envisaged. Above, we have a circa-1958 layout of the fully-realized shopping hub. It covered 962,000 leasable square feet and contained seventy-three stores. The gray area in upper left was a farm house and lot. Its owner refused to sell when the shopping facility was being developed. She passed on in the early 1960s and the heirs then sold the property to the Hudson company.
