The Santa Ana FASHION SQUARE was never expanded or renovated during its 27-year existence. In this circa-1968 site plan, the 10-year-old retail venue is essentially the same as in the late 1950s. It still encompassed the same square footage and its parking area still accommodated 3,300 autos. The Garden Grove Freeway, running north of the complex, was dedicated in 1967.
FASHION SQUARE was given a major redo in the mid-1980s. Its northeast section was demolished, with a dual-level, fully-enclosed mall built on the south section of the site. MAINPLACE SANTA ANA, dedicated in September 1987, incorporated the Bullock's and I. Magnin structures and included new Nordstrom and Robinson's stores. A North Wing (in light gray) was built in 1990. Its May Company store debuted in May of the following year.
The "industrial style" concourse of the MAINPLACE mall. In its original state, in 1987, the shopping venue spanned approximately 1.15 million leasable square feet and contained eighty-five stores and services.
