TRI-CITY MALL was officially dedicated in August 1968. The 10 million dollar structure, targeted to serve the suburbs of Mesa, Tempe and Chandler, was the first major shopping venue in Phoenix's East Valley suburbs.

Phoenix's Diamond's chain was acquired by the Dayton Corporation (of Minnesota) in May 1968. A TRI-CITY MALL store, which would be the third Diamond's branch, was still in the planning stages. It would open for business -one year after the dedication of the mall- in August 1969.
