San Ramon's tiny community-class shopping venue was developed in three phases. The first (in black) was completed in 1966. The second (in gray) was added in 1968. A third stage (indicated here as "future development") would be finished in -or around- 1980.
The ALCOSTA Safeway market operated under its original name for over 23 years. The same could not be said for the adjacent store. It opened as a Super S and soon morphed into a Safeway Drug Center. This store lasted until September 1971, when it was given a Pay 'n Save nameplate. Within a few years, the store had been rebranded as a Safeway Liquor Barn.
