The relocation of Younkers, in mid-2004, provided space for a new Target discount store. The abandoned Younkers was knocked down, with a new Target opening in July 2005.

The east facade was given a "lifestyle" makeover in 2008-2009. Three big box retailers were installed in previously existing mall space and the Main Entrance (seen here) was remodeled.

By 2009, three anchor stores have changed nameplates. The new Younkers and Target stores have been discussed. In addition, Kohl's set up shop in a vacant northwest anchor space in April 1993. Now Iowa's second-largest retail complex, MERLE HAY MALL contains over 100 stores and services. Its parking area has accommodations for 6,200 autos.
