Washington State's Costco, a membership-only operation, debuted September 15, 1983, in Kirkland, Washington. The company merged with San Diego's Price Club in 1993, with all Price Club stores coming under the Costco banner in 1997. Today, there are four hundred and thirty-three locations in the United States.

The typical Costco store averages 142,000 square feet and carries a variety of merchandise, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, seafood, baked goods, clothing, books, electronics, small home appliances, automotives and furniture.
