By the late 1960s, the open-air HILLDALE was soon to encounter its first fully-enclosed competition, namely, Madison's WEST TOWNE MALL. The 6-year-old strip center was converted to an interior mall by the addition of a steel and glass mallway along its storefronts. By 1972, a thin strip of inline stores (indicated in gray) had been added.

The HILLDALE A & P grocery, a 1962 charter tenant, as it appeared in 1975. This was just before the store would close and re-open as a Sentry Foods.
