In 1970, the open-air HILLDALE encountered its first fully-enclosed competitor, namely, Madison's WEST TOWNE MALL. The strip center was converted to an interior mall by the addition of a steel and glass mallway along its storefronts. By 1972, a thin strip of inline stores (indicated in gray) had been added.
