Tempo was a junior discount department store group owned and operated by Gamble-Skogmo, whose headquarters was in St. Louis Park, a western suburb of Minneapolis. The chain was inaugurated in March 1962. A St. Cloud, Minnesota store is seen above.

Early Tempo units often had an adjacent Red Owl supermarket. This grocer became a Gamble-Skogmo enterprise in 1967.

We now visit a Tempo, as it was configured in 1962. The stores, which only covered between 30,000 and 60,000 square feet, stocked full lines of home appliances. Note the ample selection of wringer washers on display.

Our final stop is the Farm & Garden Department. The Tempo enterprise flourished through the 1960s, with fifty stores in business in 1965. This number rose to an all-time high of fifty-three in 1970. Tempo merged with Ohio's Buckeye Mart. Some units were sold. A final store count, in 1978, listed twenty-nine Rasco-Tempo units still in business. These would be shuttered by 1983.

F.S. Rasco & Company was a California-based chain of 5 & 10-type stores, which operated in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. A Gamble-Skogmo subsidiary acquired the Rasco chain in 1951. The Rasco Variety Stores division was formed, with select Tempo stores in the west placed under Rasco management.

The Red Owl food service division opened its first Red Owl Family Center in 1968. Stores covered approximately 70,000 square feet. By 1970, the count had grown to eleven units, which operated in Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1972, there were fifteen Family Centers. The tanking of the United States economy in the mid-1970s stifled further expansion of the concept.
