The Fred Meyer chain originated in Portland, Oregon. Their first "Shopping Center" store opened in 1931. After over ninety years, the Fred Meyer enterprise is still in operation.

Valu-Mart was another discount chain based in the Pacific Northwest. An October 1971 print ad shows some of the merchandise available at the local Valu-Mart store. The latest fashions include mini-dresses and flared (or bell bottom) pants.

Between the mid-1960s and early '70s, The Houston-based Globe chain had something of an identity crisis. Stores in the same states were promoted as either Globe Discount City or Globe Shopping City. This odd dual branding had been corrected by the late 1970s, when all stores were known as simply "Globe." Unfortunately, they would soon be out of business.
