A national map depicting the major discount marts in operation in early 1970. At this time, the largest chains were New York City-based Woolco and Grant City. Michigan's Kmart had one hundred and twenty-two stores; Arkansas' Wal-Mart operated thirty-eight and Minnesota's Target clocked in with twenty-four. Gibson's Discount Centers, a major presence in the Southland, presided over nearly five hundred company-owned and franchised locations. The Venture chain, in Missouri, and Pennsylvania's Murphy's Mart (not indicated) were just starting out.
