A smaller Rochester, New York-based discount chain was a spin-off of Neisner's 5 & 10s. The Big N, or simply "Big N", stores were in operation between the early 1960s and late 1970s.

Federated Stores' discount mart spin was known as Gold Circle. The chain's corporate headquarters was located outside of Columbus, Ohio. Gold Circe was run into the ground in 1988, by Canadian corporate raider Robert Campeau.
