Nordstrom's Shoes acquired Best's apparel, another Seattle-centric retailer, in 1963. The two concerns merged in 1967, forming a chain of stores known as Nordstrom Best. The fifth branch store, seen here, anchored Tukwila, Washington's SOUTHCENTER mall and opened its doors in July 1968.

In 1973, all Nordstrom Best stores were rebranded as simply Nordstrom. A massive expansion of the company soon got underway. The first California store, depicted here, was added to Costa Mesa's SOUTH COAST PLAZA. It opened in May 1978.

Nordstrom rehabilitated a shuttered center city Seattle Frederick & Nelson store into its 383,000 square foot flagship. It commenced operation, as a Nordstrom, in August 1998.
