By 1998, the shopping hub, known as NORTHLINE MALL since 1972, was a past its prime property. Montgomery Ward had downsized its first level (and would soon shut down completely). Joske's went dark in 1988. In 1997-1998, the vacant store was replaced by a new Magic Johnson megaplex (indicated in gray). The mall would lumber on into the early 21st century. 


In 2005, plans got underway to unmall the site and create an open-air, power-format shopping hub. Known as NORTHLINE COMMONS, it would be opened in two phases, as the mall was slowly demolished.
