The complex had been known as NORTHLINE MALL since 1972. By the time of this 1998 plan, the facility was well past its prime. Montgomery Ward had downsized its first level (and would soon shut down completely). Joske's had gone dark in 1988. The vacant store was replaced by the Magic Johnson Northline Mall 12 (in gray). Unfortunately, this failed to revive the struggling shopping center.

In 2005, plans got underway to "un-mall" the site and build an open-air, power-format complex. Known as NORTHLINE COMMONS, it would be opened in phases, as the mall was slowly being demolished.
