In 1981 and '82, the complex was given a major makeover. It was fully enclosed, an upper level was built on top of the first, and two anchor stores were added; Mervyn's and Nordstrom. This circa-1983 plan also shows a renovation and expansion of Sears, which had been completed in 1966.

At the time of this circa-1995 plan, The Emporium's days are numbered, as are those of the 1950s-vintage Sears. The latter would soon relocate. The latest thing at HILLSDALE is the Food 31 Court, which was a redress of the old Restaurant Court in the north store block.
