A second olden days interior view demonstrates the low-intensity lighting that was popular at the time. The prevailing wisdom was that brightly-lit stores would draw customers in.

Although it encompassed a whopping 200,000 square feet, J.C. Penney was still the second-largest anchor at LAFAYETTE SQUARE. The largest store in the mall was Sears, which covered 230,000.
