The city's third downtown mall project was a redevelopment of SALEM PLAZA. That structure was gutted, with an upper retail level added. Mervyn's was signed to anchor the new complex, which was to be known as SALEM CENTRE.

On a circa-1989 plan, what originally opened as NORDSTROM MALL is shown in black. With completion of the late 1980s renovation, this structure is now promoted as SALEM CENTRE SOUTH. The reconstructed PLAZA structure (in medium gray) is now known as SALEM CENTRE NORTH.
