In a circa-1999 site plan, we see the beginnings of the metamorphosis of the mall into a big box-based power center. Small inline store spaces in the South and East Wings have been gutted and reconfigured as large Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, Goody's and Staples stores. Moreover, the 6-plex cinema now sports eleven screens.
The power center conversion was completed with a new Sam's Club, in 2005. In this circa-2014 plan, we see that several freestanding businesses now surround the mall, including Piccadilly (nee' Morrison's) Cafeteria, David's Bridal and Romano's Macaroni Grill. There are now fifteen stores operating in the main shopping center structure. These all have exterior entries, as the interior mallway has been closed to the public since 2008.
A store exodus got underway in January 2016, with Best Buy and Old Navy moving to a new quarters in the up and coming McGOWIN PARK power center. The SPRINGDALE Belk went south (literally) in September 2016, followed by Staples, which closed in January 2017. In mid-2017, Burlington (Coat Factory) was one of seven stores still in operation in the mall proper.
