A & S Huntington incorporated 220,000 square feet and included two restaurants; The Garden Room and The Snack Bar. A & S became the mall's first operational store in March 1962.

Macy's Huntington was the chain's sixth branch. Dedicated in September 1962, it covered 230,000 square feet. Some of the store's features were The Big Top restaurant and a beauty salon. In this view of the mall's South Court, the Macy's Huntington storefront is seen on the right. WALT WHITMAN CENTER was the first shopping complex to incorporate retail rivals Macy's and Abraham & Straus.

Lerner Shops was a junior anchor at the original WALT WHITMAN CENTER. The "exciting new world of fashion" encompassed 15,000 square feet. It was the 319th unit in the chain.
