Topps discount department stores arrived -in Hartford, Connecticut- in October 1956. The chain proved quite profitable and was rapidly expanded into twelve states.

The grand opening of the Bradlees mother store is announced in this March 1958 newspaper spread. The store was located in New London, Connecticut. Dig those automobile tail fins, Daddy-oh!
