The commercial nemesis of BOWLING GREEN MALL was GREENWOOD MALL. This complex, which was dedicated in September 1979, originally encompassed nearly 600,000 leasable square feet and housed twice as many stores as BOWLING GREEN.

The completion of GREENWOOD MALL was the beginning of the end for its older -and smaller- counterpart. By late 1979, the original thirty-two stores at BOWLING GREEN MALL had dropped to a total of twenty-three.
